Many things are learned slowly. Actually most things. Except fire. You learn quickly not to touch fire. This lot that follows are some of those slower things. Most adults have not arrived there yet and are most likely never going to get there. But, we have to start somewhere and if we can do it with the color and background of a Joseph Bible lesson for kids, then lets do it. Learning happens anyway in mm graduations on a metre ruler. In other words slowly, but if we keep going, it builds up.
Joseph’s story is one of the most powerful stories in the Bible for kids and preteens. It includes family conflict, jealousy, betrayal, slavery, temptation, prison, success, forgiveness, and ultimately God’s purpose.
But Joseph’s story is more than an exciting Bible adventure. It shows us how a person can keep trusting God when life feels unfair, confusing, or completely out of control.

1. God Is With You When Life Feels Unfair
Joseph did not always get what he deserved.
His father loved him deeply and gave him a special robe. His brothers became jealous of him and eventually sold him to traders travelling to Egypt.
Imagine being Joseph.
He had done nothing to deserve what happened to him. One moment he was living with his family; the next he was being taken away to a completely different country.
Yet Joseph did not give up on God.
Genesis tells us that the Lord was with Joseph in Egypt.
What can kids learn?
Sometimes life feels unfair. You might be blamed for something you didn’t do, left out by friends, treated differently, or face circumstances you cannot control.
Joseph reminds us that an unfair situation does not mean God has abandoned you.
2. Your Character Matters When Nobody Is Watching
Joseph eventually became a servant in Potiphar’s household. He was trusted with responsibility, but then faced a serious temptation.
Potiphar’s wife tried to persuade Joseph to do something wrong.
Joseph refused.
He knew that giving in would be sinful, even though doing the right thing could cost him.
And it did.
Joseph was falsely accused and ended up in prison.
What can kids learn?
Doing the right thing does not always produce an immediate reward.
Sometimes choosing integrity can actually make life harder.
But your character is built by the choices you make when nobody is watching.
For a preteen, that might mean:
- telling the truth when lying would be easier
- refusing to join in when friends are doing something wrong
- returning something that isn’t yours
- keeping a promise
- choosing kindness when nobody will notice
Joseph shows us that integrity is worth protecting.
3. Faith Does Not Mean You Will Never Have Problems
Joseph’s life was certainly not easy.
He experienced:
Betrayal → Slavery → False Accusation → Prison → Waiting
Yet God continued working through his circumstances.
This is an important lesson for kids because Christianity does not promise that following God will make every problem disappear.
Faith does not mean saying, “Nothing bad will ever happen to me.”
Faith means saying:
“God is still with me, even when something bad is happening.”
Joseph could not see the whole story while he was living it.
Neither can we.
4. Waiting Does Not Mean God Has Forgotten You
Joseph spent years waiting.
He waited in Potiphar’s household.
He waited in prison.
He waited after interpreting the dreams of Pharaoh’s servants.
The cupbearer eventually remembered Joseph, but only after Joseph had spent even more time waiting.
That must have been incredibly frustrating.
Joseph had helped someone who could have helped him, but he was forgotten.
What can kids learn?
Waiting is difficult.
Preteens often want answers immediately:
- When will things change?
- When will someone understand?
- When will I get my chance?
- When will God answer my prayer?
Joseph’s story teaches us that God can still be working during seasons when nothing seems to be happening.
Waiting is not necessarily wasted time.
5. Use Your Gifts to Help Others
Joseph had a special ability to interpret dreams, but he did not use that ability simply to make himself look important.
When Pharaoh needed someone to explain his dreams, Joseph made it clear that the interpretation came from God.
Joseph then used what God had given him to help Egypt prepare for years of famine.
His gift eventually became part of his purpose.
What can kids learn?
God has given every person abilities, interests, and opportunities.
Maybe you are good at:
- encouraging people
- solving problems
- drawing
- organising
- explaining things
- listening
- helping younger children
- working with technology
- creating things
Instead of asking only, “What am I good at?”, ask:
“How can I use what I’m good at to help others?”
Your gifts are not just for showing what you can do. They can become ways to serve God and people.
6. Success Should Not Change Who You Are
Joseph went from being a prisoner to becoming one of the most powerful people in Egypt.
Pharaoh placed him in charge of the country’s preparations for the coming famine.
That was a huge change.
But Joseph did not suddenly become a completely different person.
He continued to use wisdom, responsibility, and leadership.
What can kids learn?
Success can come in many forms.
You might become:
- captain of a sports team
- class leader
- the person everyone asks for help
- successful at school
- popular with your friends
- really good at something
Those things are exciting—but they should not become your identity.
Who you are matters more than how successful you become.
Joseph’s life shows that leadership is not about being more important than everyone else. It is about using responsibility well.
7. Forgiveness Is Powerful
One of the most remarkable parts of Joseph’s story happens when his brothers eventually come to Egypt looking for food.
They do not recognise Joseph.
But Joseph recognises them.
These are the same brothers who had betrayed him and sold him.
Joseph had every reason to be angry.
Instead, he eventually reveals who he is and chooses forgiveness.
That does not mean what his brothers did was acceptable.
It means Joseph refused to let their actions control the rest of his life.
What can kids learn?
Forgiveness does not mean pretending that something hurtful never happened.
It means choosing not to hold onto revenge.
Sometimes forgiveness takes time. Sometimes you need help from a trusted adult when someone has seriously hurt you.
But Joseph shows us that forgiveness can break the power that anger and bitterness have over us.
8. God Can Bring Good From Difficult Situations
Joseph eventually explained something important to his brothers.
They had intended to harm him, but God had been working through the situation to save many lives.
Joseph did not say that their actions were good.
They weren’t.
Instead, he recognised that God could bring good out of something that had been intended for evil.
This is one of the most important lessons in the entire story.

Something difficult happening does not automatically mean God caused it.
But it does mean we can trust God to work even when we cannot understand what is happening.
A difficult experience might eventually teach you:
- patience
- courage
- compassion
- wisdom
- resilience
- empathy
You may not see the purpose immediately.
Joseph certainly didn’t.
9. Your Past Does Not Have to Decide Your Future
Joseph could have allowed his past to define him.
He could have thought:
“I’m the boy my brothers rejected.”
“I’m the slave who was sold.”
“I’m the prisoner who was forgotten.”
Instead, his story continued.
His past was real, but it was not the end of his story.
What can kids learn?
A mistake, failure, rejection, friendship problem, difficult family situation, or embarrassing moment does not have to determine who you become.
You are not permanently defined by:
- your worst mistake
- someone else’s opinion
- one bad day
- a failed test
- being left out
- something embarrassing you did years ago
God can continue writing your story.
10. Trust God Even When You Cannot See the Whole Plan
Perhaps the biggest lesson from Joseph’s life is also the simplest:
Joseph could not see God’s entire plan—but he kept moving forward.
When Joseph was in the pit, he could not see the palace.
When he was a slave, he could not see his future position in Egypt.
When he was in prison, he could not see the people who would eventually come to him for help.
And when his brothers betrayed him, he could not see how God would eventually use his story to save their family.
God’s plan became clearer over time.

You don’t have to know everything that will happen next.
You can trust God with:
- your friendships
- your school
- your family
- your future
- your mistakes
- your gifts
- your worries
- your dreams
Faith means trusting God one step at a time.
What Does Joseph’s Story Teach Us About Faith?
Joseph’s life gives kids a bigger picture of what faith really looks like.
Faith isn’t just singing worship songs or knowing Bible verses.
Faith is choosing to trust God when:
Life is unfair.
You’re tempted to do wrong.
You’re waiting for an answer.
Someone hurts you.
You don’t understand what God is doing.
Your circumstances suddenly change.
Joseph experienced all of these things.
And through them, his character grew.

Joseph could not see the whole picture.
But God could.
