A crowd admires a giant LEGO castle while a smiling child quietly adds one brick at a time, illustrating what does it mean to grow spiritually through small, faithful daily steps.
What does it mean to grow spiritually? Like building a castle one brick at a time, spiritual growth happens through small, consistent choices that help us become more like Jesus.

What Does It Mean to Grow Spiritually?

Have you ever planted a seed?

At first, nothing seems to happen. For days, the soil looks exactly the same. Then, one morning, a tiny green shoot appears. Week after week it grows a little taller, develops stronger roots, and eventually becomes a healthy plant.

Our lives with God grow in much the same way.

Many people imagine that becoming a Christian instantly makes someone spiritually mature. But that’s not how God designed it. The moment we begin following Jesus is the beginning of a journey—not the finish line.

So, what does it mean to grow spiritually? It means becoming a little more like Jesus every day. We gradually learn to trust God more, love others better, understand His Word more deeply, and make choices that honour Him. Spiritual growth isn’t about becoming perfect overnight; it’s about allowing God to keep changing us throughout our lives.

Why Spiritual Growth Doesn’t Happen Overnight

Imagine expecting a Grade 1 student to solve university maths problems. That wouldn’t make sense because growth takes time.

The same is true in our faith.

God never expects us to know everything immediately. Instead, He patiently teaches us as we walk with Him. Every prayer, every Bible story we read, every act of kindness, and every lesson we learn helps us grow a little stronger.

Sometimes the changes are easy to notice. Other times they’re happening quietly inside us. We may become a little more patient, a little more forgiving, or quicker to trust God when life feels difficult.

Real spiritual growth often happens in small steps that add up over time.

What the Bible Says About Spiritual Growth

The Bible compares our faith to growing plants many times because everyone understands that healthy things grow.

Jesus said:

“I am the vine; you are the branches… if you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit.” (John 15:5)

A branch doesn’t force itself to grow fruit. It stays connected to the vine, and the fruit grows naturally.

The Apostle Peter also encouraged believers:

“Grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.” (2 Peter 3:18)

Growing spiritually means growing in two important ways:

  • Knowing God better.
  • Becoming more like Him in how we live.

As we spend time with God, our character begins to change. We become more loving, patient, honest, generous, forgiving, and kind—not because we’re trying to earn God’s love, but because His love is changing us.

Four Habits That Help You Grow Spiritually

If someone asked, “What does it mean to grow spiritually?”, one of the best answers is learning daily habits that help us stay close to God.

1. Spend Time with God

Relationships grow through time together.

Talking with God through prayer and reading the Bible helps us know Him better. Just like friends become closer by talking regularly, our friendship with God grows when we spend time with Him.

2. Put God’s Word into Practice

Knowing the Bible isn’t enough.

James reminds us that we should be people who do God’s Word, not just hear it.

When we choose honesty instead of lying, kindness instead of selfishness, or forgiveness instead of revenge, our faith becomes part of everyday life.

3. Learn from Other Christians

God never intended us to follow Jesus alone.

Church, youth groups, Christian friends, parents, and teachers all help us grow. They encourage us, answer questions, and remind us that everyone is still learning.

Growing together is often easier than growing alone.

4. Keep Going Even When You Make Mistakes

Every Christian makes mistakes.

The difference is that followers of Jesus don’t give up. We ask for forgiveness, learn from our mistakes, and keep walking with Him.

God isn’t looking for perfection.

He’s looking for hearts that keep following Him.

Signs That You Are Growing Spiritually

Sometimes we wonder whether we’re actually growing.

Here are a few signs that God is working in your life:

  • You want to know God better.
  • You pray more naturally.
  • You enjoy learning from the Bible.
  • You’re becoming kinder to others.
  • You notice when you’ve done something wrong.
  • You forgive more quickly.
  • You trust God during difficult times.
  • You care more about making wise choices.

None of these happen perfectly.

But over time, they begin to grow—just like a healthy tree.

Spiritual Growth Is a Lifetime Journey

One of the biggest misunderstandings Christians have is believing there comes a point where they’ve “arrived.”

The truth is that nobody ever stops growing.

Adults continue growing spiritually.

Pastors continue growing spiritually.

Bible teachers continue growing spiritually.

Every follower of Jesus continues learning more about God throughout life.

That’s one of the exciting parts of being a Christian.

Every day is another opportunity to discover something new about God.

Keep Taking the Next Step

So, what does it mean to grow spiritually?

It means walking with God one step at a time.

It means spending time with Him, learning from His Word, trusting Him through life’s challenges, and allowing Him to shape your heart day by day.

Just like a tiny seed eventually becomes a strong tree, small daily choices help build a strong lifelong faith.

You don’t have to grow all at once.

You simply need to keep taking the next step with Jesus.
